One step enough for me
Keep Thou my feet;
I do not ask to see the distant scene;
One step enough for me.
The above lines speak about being content with knowing just the next step, even if you do not know the whole picture. Sounds nice, no?
Now imagine you keep saying this out loud almost every day. What will it elicit? Though there's no generalized answer, it could imprint in our minds that moving forward and progressing is as important (if not more) as the destination we desire to reach. And what if it’s kids singing this aloud? Imagine how big of an impact it would leave.
“Lead Kindly Light” was one of the songs we used to sing in our school assembly.
Back then, I always thought the only thing I'd miss after school would be either having lunch together with my friends or the famous canteen bonda. But I was caught off guard when I found myself missing the morning assembly the most.
I vividly remember my school assembly. We had around 10–12 prayer songs, and nobody would know which song would be sung when. Our Director Sir would announce, “Today we’ll sing I Shall Not Be Moved,” and somehow we all knew the lyrics by heart. I think that’s what made it more exciting — not knowing which song we’d be singing that day.
Someday we’d sing We Shall Overcome in all seriousness, and the next day we’d be singing Old McDonald’s Farm like little kids. One day we’d be majestically singing Kaani Nilam Vendum by Bharathiyar, and the next day, Portuguese Karaiyya while laughing out loud.
His speech mostly started with “Today is a sweltering day, the sun is scorching,” and would end after 5 (give or take) of us fainted. The five minutes extra time for not hitting the three Jaya heys in the National Anthem properly? Unforgettable.
One of the best things about being a teacher now is that I get to experience school assemblies again - even if it is from the other side.
But somewhere between skipping breakfast to skip the morning prayer and being willing to pay just to attend it one more time — we all grew up.
