Doraemon: love, laughter and virtues

What they see, they do. It ain't just for monkeys but also for kids. The world teaches you more than textbooks. And unlike us adults, kids struggle to differentiate between good and bad. It is our foremost responsibility to teach them while they're young.

Obviously, what they're reading and watching plays a big role. Once, cartoons were child-friendly and educational. But some cartoons these days disguise arrogance and ignorance as humor, while some promote fat-shaming. Kids grow up watching these.

Things like these are so normalized. There's a quote that says, "It's only a joke when both parties are having fun. If it's one-sided, it's called bullying."

But amid all these cartoons, we have a few that instill virtues in young minds. Doraemon is one of the daisies in a field of poisonous ivy.

Today, I'll be walking you through an episode called "Thank You Badge." Like the name says, it's all about gratitude and appreciation.

The episode starts with our protagonist, Nobita, receiving a surprise gift from his father. He unwraps the gift with utmost excitement, expecting a video game but gets an educational toy instead. Disappointed, Nobita takes it out on his dad and leaves the gift untouched.

To straighten his behaviour, Nobita's mother decides to cut his allowance. Knowing this, Nobita desperately wants to take back his words and undo his actions. As always, he reaches out to his saviour, Doraemon.

Doraemon gives him a brand-new device called "the thank you badge." This badge functions when it is pinned to his shirt and makes the badge holder give out words of appreciation accordingly.

Nobita, in an instance, goes down to his father and expresses his gratitude towards him for the gift, and in turn, his father promises to get him his video game next month.

He goes to his mother and compliments and thanks her for making tasty snacks every day and it resulted in increased allowance.

When he threw a tantrum, he didn't get what he asked for. But when he appreciates what he already has and compliments the people around him, he got what he wanted without even asking for it. Words of appreciation work wonders, and this episode of Doraemon showcased it perfectly.

Always monitor what your kids are watching. Watch how you're acting around them. Watch how you're treating other people, especially strangers. Because what they see, they do.
